Mermaid's Song — Giclée Art Print

High on the Staffordshire Moorlands, in a remote and windswept corner of the Peak District between Leek, Meerbrook and Upper Hulme, lies Black Mere Pool. Dark, still, and seemingly bottomless, it sits alone in the heather like something from another world. And according to one of England's most haunting and unusual legends — it is.

Black Mere is home to a mermaid.

England has many coastal mermaid myths, but inland ones are extraordinarily rare. The legend of the Mermaid of Blakemere is one of the very few — and one of the most compelling. Some say she was once a local woman, drowned unjustly in the pool, her spirit now bound forever to its dark waters. Others tell of a sinister siren who lured unsuspecting men to their deaths on the moorland's edge. All versions agree on one thing: the pool must never be drained. Those who have tried, the legend warns, have brought catastrophic floods down upon the surrounding villages.

Sheila Gill has painted this brooding, mysterious landscape with all the atmosphere it demands. The moorland stretches away under a vast, shifting sky — wild, remote and utterly captivating. Somewhere beneath that dark water, perhaps, the mermaid waits. It is a painting that holds a secret, and one that rewards looking at long and slowly.

Reproduced as a museum-quality Giclée fine art print on luxurious 310 GSM velvet-textured inkjet paper, every nuance of the original — the drama of the moorland, the mystery of the pool, the extraordinary quality of the upland light — is rendered with exceptional depth and atmosphere. Printed with archival inks for colour and quality that will last for generations.
