Scattered like forgotten coins beneath the gritstone battlements of Stanage Edge, these abandoned millstones are one of the most recognisable sights in the Peak District. Once destined for the mills of the North, they were left half-finished when the quarrying industry declined, and now sit quietly in the heather as walkers and climbers pass by on their way up to the Edge. Sheila Gill's watercolour captures the weathered, textured strata of the gritstone rising above, glowing gold, violet and ochre in the light, with the millstones resting on a bed of warm autumn colour below.
