Between Stanage to the north and Curbar to the south lies Froggatt Edge — perhaps the most quietly beautiful of all the great Derbyshire gritstone escarpments. Less dramatic in scale than its neighbours, it makes up for it in atmosphere. Ancient oak woodland clings to the slopes below the rocks, the River Derwent winds through the valley far beneath, and the views across the eastern moors on a clear day are simply breathtaking.

Froggatt has a particular magic at certain times of day and certain times of year — the autumn colours in the woodland below, the bracken turning bronze on the moorland above, the low golden light of a late afternoon catching the gritstone and turning it warm and honeyed. Sheila Gill has painted it in exactly that kind of light, and the result is a landscape of extraordinary warmth and beauty.
