After a morning fossil hunting on the shore with my grandson, we climbed up and sat together on the harbour wall at Staithes — high enough to take in the whole village spread out below us, the beck winding beyond, the boats, the rooftops, the sea beyond it all. One of those perfect, quiet moments that you tuck away and return to again and again. A day to treasure for us both.

Staithes is one of the most painterly villages on the Yorkshire coast — a tight-knit cluster of fishermen's cottages tumbling down to a narrow harbour, largely unchanged for centuries. Turner painted here. The Staithes Group of artists made it famous. And on a clear morning, sitting on that harbour wall, it's not hard to understand why.
