After studying graphics and illustration at Watford Art School in the 1960s Mike concentrated for some years on printmaking and etching, becoming Vice-President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Now a Fellow of that society, he is also one of the 84 elected members of the Royal Watercolour Society.

Mike began to teach while he was still a student himself and has since taught in colleges throughout the south-east of England and at Royal Watercolour Society master classes.

He writes regularly for art magazines and his first book, Mike Chaplin's Expressive Watercolours, was published in October 2001.
